About

Photograph of Mark Baynes

Photo: Vickie Flores

Baynes Media is Mark Baynes. For many years Baynes Photography was Mark Baynes but that description just does not fit any more.

Formal education

I have a professional qualification in photography from an institution which was so bad I refuse to mention its name. Budding photographers should use the street as their college and books as their tutors.

I have a BA in Computing and Artificial Intelligence and an MA in Media Studies (Multimedia) from the University of Sussex.

Documentary photography

I am a documentary photographer by instinct and am currently based in Wapping, east London, U.K.

You can see where my work has been published here.

I specialise in news, editorial and reportage. With over 17 years experience of professional photography I have adapted my knowledge of film techniques to digital capture and production methods.

I work in a variety of different ways, on commission, working with an agency or simply travelling abroad and photographing what I find.

While living in Bilbao in the Basque Country, I documented the traditions and customs of the Basque people, particularly folk dance.

I am now living in Wapping and after a year of living here I am starting to document the unique urban landscape in which I am lucky enough to live.

Photo geek details

I use Canon stills gear and have an extensive Mac based digital work flow setup including more RAID drives than you can shake a stick at.

Video is mainly shot using a Canon XF300. I sometimes use a Canon 5D Mk2 for video work, but it’s usually more trouble than it’s worth. Having the option is extremely useful though.

Web geek details

I use a wide variety of software tools to produce multimedia content including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom, Apple’s Final Cut Pro and iMovie and Soundslides.
